There’s plenty of bite with this Bulldog.
The Bulldog Smash is a summery spin on the classic Whiskey Smash. The Whiskey Smash appeared on the cocktail scene somewhere around 1887 with the publication of “The Bartenders Guide” by Jerry Thomas. The traditional Whiskey Smash is simply whiskey, simple syrup, mint, lemon juice, and lots of ice, which bears a striking resemblance to a Mint Julep. Coincidence? Of course not.
The Whiskey Smash may have started the “smash” family of cocktails, but the related “julep” family dates back as far back as the 18th century. In fact, they were so popular that doctors in the American South were actually prescribing whiskey juleps for upset stomachs in the 1770s. So while the Whiskey Smash is certainly a classic, it was certainly not the first of its kind. The last century also shows it’s not the last of its kind with variations like the Sweet Tea Smash and even the Suffering Bastard. But the Bulldog Smash is still ready to make a big splash in the smash world.
Like any good smash, the Bulldog Smash begins with bourbon, sugar, lemon juice, and a whole bunch of mint. But this drink’s bark comes from fresh peaches and a splash of Cointreau. Together, served on a pile of fresh ice, these ingredients make the perfect, modern, seasonal smash.
